Abstract

The article investigates the reception of the work of Nicos Poulantzas in Brazilian political sociology during the 1970s, addressing a gap in the literature that has already extensively analyzed the influences of Gramsci and Althusser. The text reconstructs the conditions under which his ideas circulated in the country, highlighting the role of intellectual mediations, readings in the original language, and the influence of authors who engaged with his work. To this end, the article examines how 21 Brazilian intellectuals mobilized Poulantzian categories in their works. The selection of the corpus did not follow a systematic literature review, but was primarily guided by the availability and accessibility of sources. Even so, it sought to include authors representative of the debates of the time, in order to enable the reconstruction of relevant trends in the reception of Poulantzas in Brazil. The study identifies two main circuits of reception: one linked to the University of São Paulo and the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP); and another composed of intellectuals with academic training abroad and professional trajectories in Rio de Janeiro. More than simply mapping influences, the study aims to understand the theoretical and political context in which Poulantzas was appropriated, showing how his formulations on the state and social classes were reinterpreted in light of the analytical challenges posed by Brazilian reality. In doing so, the article contributes to the history of political sociology in Brazil and to the understanding of how Marxist theories circulate and are appropriated in peripheral contexts.
