The Disruptive Nature of Artificial Intelligence in the World of Work

Abstract

The relevance of this discussion includes the sense of contributing to the debate on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the world of work based on epistemological studies. Understanding the potential and limits of different disruptive technologies, such as AI, becomes essential to align a coherent discussion on changes and transformations in future jobs. This article aims to discuss the effect (phenomenon) of artificial intelligence in the world of work from the perspective of the Critical Theory of Technology. The methodology adopted involves bibliographic research with references to Feenberg (2014), Verkerk et al. (2018), Araújo (2024) and Portes (2024) who discuss the Critical Theory of Technology and the authors who discuss AI Santaella (2023) and Kaufman (2022), with approaches to the world of work in Schwaab (2016) and Lee and Qiufan (2021). Based on the analysis of the Critical Theory of Technology, we have identified that in professions whose profile is close to the asocial and creative, AI plays an ambivalent role. On the one hand, it can automate repetitive tasks, allowing creative professionals to focus on more subjective and innovative aspects. We are facing a symbiosis between human capabilities and those of AI, characterizing the reconfiguration of work, with the purpose of integrated collaboration.
