Abstract

This text aims to briefly analyze five novels by Palestinian writer Ghassan Kanafani, which will be read through the methodological lens of Antonio Gramsci's concept of "subaltern groups" and his notion of "integral" historiography. Through the Palestinian author's novels, translated into Portuguese—"Men in the Sun," "Umm Saad," "Return to Haifa," "What Remained Them," and "Children of Palestine," we intend to identify and map the ways in which Kanafani acts as an "integral historian" of the Palestinian emancipatory cause after the establishment of the State of Israel in the region, as well as the ways in which his literature and historiography serve as a political voice for the history of Palestinian subaltern groups in the face of the Israeli occupation, according to our hypothesis. We will also present our secondary hypothesis that Kanafani, through his writings, demonstrates the emergence, within Palestinian family groups, of a specific subjectivity linked to the necessary war sacrifice of family members.
