The essay aims to recover the theoretical and methodological contribution of the sociologist Octavio Ianni, considering the relevance of his analyzes and reflections, based on Marxism, on society and politics in contemporary capitalism. This proposal characterizes the use of the concepts of globalization, citizenship, social class, public policies and structural change. This is a bibliographic analysis in the field of “social experiences, thus emphasizing the social character” as stated by Barbier. However, a dialogue is established between the ideological differences of historical materialism assumed by Ianni and the proposal of Barbier’s methodology of social experiences. The highlights of Ianni’s work are themes related to Brazil’s national formation and the subject of the country’s subordination to international economic agencies. The magnitude of his contribution to the debate on politics and international relations in the context of globalization is recognized.
