Abstract

The article aims to investigates the performance of politicians from São Paulo in the context of the Porto Liberal Revolution, triggered in Portugal in 1820, whose developments in Brazil were the organization of governing boards and the beginning of discussions about the elaboration of a new Constitution. The choice for the regional perspective is due to the perception that the actions of the Provisional Government of São Paulo Province, together with its deputies elected to the Courts of Lisbon, were fundamental to build the cohesion among the several regional elites from different provinces that was necessary for the definitive political break with Portugal. Armed with our own project, systematized in the historical document “Remembrances and notes from the Provisional Government of the Province of São Paulo to its deputies”, which we will analyze, we will try to follow the trajectory of the discussions around this letter program and understand, in more detail, the construction of the support base for the Prince Regent D. Pedro and the political project for Brazil that was generated at that moment. To do so, we will observe opinions and representations made by the provisional government of São Paulo and by the Courts of Lisbon in debate at the Constituent Assembly.
